WHY A CROWN?: THE HISTORY BEHIND THE NAME
We often find people asking us about the origins of Crown Winery. Most vineyards are named after families and places, but our story begins with a thing—a crown.
In 1961, the winner of the Miss Tennessee Scholarship Pageant was a woman named Rita. After winning the title of Miss Tennessee, Rita won the Miss Dixie pageant, earning a grand total of $41,000. Miss Rita used this money to attend college and later study abroad in Italy. Here she found her love for the Tuscan countryside.
Some time later, Rita married Peter, a British gas physicist. In 2005, they decided to buy this 35 acre dairy farm and transformed it into the winery we have today! They named it after Rita’s pageantry accomplishment and Peter’s tie to the British Crown.
Like this story, our winery is full of a rich history. Under new ownership, we felt to honor the original founders, it was important to keep the name as it was before. However, the tie to the crown that we have is through Jesus Christ.
